History of Leonard’s NYC Fine Food Market
Leonards’ Market is a third generation family owned business started by Peter Leonard, an Irish immigrant, in 1910. Peter started in the seafood business as a young boy whose job it was to open carriage doors for the wealthy ladies of the Upper East Side. After saving and learning the trade, he opened his own store which is currently owned by his grandsons Peter & John Leonard, who are also cousins. Leonards’ is a landmark which has been serving celebrities, chefs and the most discriminating New Yorkers for generations.
Owners John & Peter stock not only prime dry aged beef, but also grass fed beef specifically selected from local New York farms. Peter hand selects the seafood fresh early each morning at the Hunts Point Fulton Fish Market.
“This store has always been the lifeblood of our family” explains Peter, “My father (2nd generation owner) would (jokingly) say, get married on a Sunday when the store is closed so that I can come!”
In the addition to their excellent meat & seafood, Leonards’ now carries a wide variety of organic meats, vegetables & other products as well as a selection of delicious homemade soups & sauces.
Store manager Sharon, originally from Ireland, has been with Leonards’ since 2001. . “I feel like I’m family,” she smiles, “and the other staff feel the same. There’s nothing the Leonard’s wouldn’t do to accommodate you. As we’ve grown older, we’ve grown closer. There’s nothing they won’t do to help you along,” she says in her Irish lilt, “it’s a good feeling, you know, to come into work in the morning happy every day.”
“We take all our orders by the phone,” explains Sharon who also does their Social Media and Marketing, accounts, and advertising, “so it’s very personalized. I can recognize many of our customers from the minute they say hello on the phone.”
Leonard’s is now accepting Holiday Orders. Customized & Decorated Party Platters.
